Sunday September 2nd, 2pm KO
Penwortham St Teresas    League B        Away    2-1 win

We kicked off the 2007-2008 season away at one of the teams relegated from last season, Penwortham St Teresas. This was a game of two halves, assisted but not determined by the breeze.  The first half saw PST pushing hard to break down the HB defence and generally they were the better team. An excellent strike from some 25 metres out means PST took the lead. They had half chances to go further ahead but just befor the break Riley passed the ball into the net after good work by Wilson had caused confusion.  HT: PST 1 HB 1.

The second half was a different matter with some determined play from HB. Haddock played well in the midfield assisted by Sutton.  It was Wilson who scored the second goal with a cool lob over the 'keeper. FT: PST1 HB2.

Comment: this was a tough and sometimes scrappy first game and credit to PST for pushing the HB boys in this game all the way.

Wednesday 5th September, 6.15pm KO
Lancon Juniors                League B        Home    6-0 win

Our first home game at Shore Road welcomed Lancon Juniors (LJ) a team who last season had struggled. They had begun their season well with an exciting 6-5 victory over Springfields.

HB put in a gritty performance to score six without reply. The defence looked strong this evening and going forward the attack was well supported from midfield. Four goals came from Wilson, including a penalty that saw a LJ player dismissed by the referee. Riley and Haddock also scored.

Comment: This was a decent performance with some good pass and move play from the HB players. Credit to Wilson for bagging four goals.

Sunday September 9th, 2pm KO
Bridge Colts Juniors            LYFA Cup    Home    3-3 win on penalties

This was a tremendous and often exciting game with Bridge Colts Juniors,
a North Bury Junior League Division A team visiting Shore Road. Credit to both sets of players and to a referee who controlled the match well. HB showed grit and determination to finish the game as victors after falling behind on three separate occasions.

Slack marking down the HB right saw a well placed shot in the back of the HB net, 1-0 for BCJ. Hard work and no shortage of quick thinking saw HB equalise as the opposition 'keeper spilled and Haddock was on hand to score. HT: 1-1.

In the second half play continued in the same pattern but even better. Both teams looked to play the ball around and with no little pace the game fizzed. With time and space the BCJ centre half stepped up to set up a chance to make it 2-1 to the visitors. Then a scuffed volley by Southern saw Wilson just get his toe to the ball before defender and 'keeper, a goal that looked like it was coming, 2-2. Just a few minutes later BCJ took the lead after HB lost possession up the field and stepped off their opponents and allowed too much time and space, 2-3. After a period of pressure the ball broke for Barnes from some 25 metres out who lashed in the third equaliser of the day. FT: HB3 CBJ3.

Extra time was demanding for both sets of teams and while there were chances for both teams credit to Wallbank who pulled off a great save when it looked like a goal was possible. AET: HB3 CBJ3.

The game then went to penalites - with all the associated pain, rhetoric and frustration. After five penalties each the score was 4-4 demonstrating the quality of the penalties rather than goalkeeping inadequacy. When Carney (J) slotted number 6 for HB Wallbank followed with a great save to win the game.

Comment: an excellent game from two teams that attacked and defended well, going toe-to-toe in more than a literal sense.  Well done.

Sunday September 16th, 2pm KO
Deepdale Juniors        League B    Away    7-0 win

We played a competitive Deepdale (DJ) team for our second away game of the season. With a couple of players injured the squad was able to respond and produce a good team performance.

HB got the game off to a quick start with the first shot coming within 15 seconds. This seemed to set the pattern of play with half chances falling to Carter and Riley before Wilson scored in the sixth minute. A second followed, scored by Carter after good work from Riley. Carter registered his second goal and it was 3-0 after 20 minutes. Before the break Wilson made it a brace. HT: DJ0 HB4.

Deepdale gave a committed performance often playing it long from the goalkeeper. They battled well in the midfield but Riley's persistance brought just rewards when he scored one, put through well by Carter and then for a second when Wilson played him in. Not to be outdone Wilson scored an individual goal of quality. There was still time to see chances come and go, while at the back Wallbank kept his composure and a cleen sheet. FT: DJ0 HB7.

Comment: An excellent performance today from Wilson but lots of good effort all over the pitch.

Sunday September 23rd, 11am KO
Brinscall Village
League B    Away    4-6 defeat

This game was a peculiar one. Six goals conceded, strange ball and one or two disputable decisions by the referee. Well done to Brinscall is taking the points. In the first half the scoring sequence went 1-0, 1-1, then 1-2 with the Brinscall equaliser looking offside and the second arriving in the 44th minute. In the second half after taking the lead Brinscall came back to equalise and fought hard to take the lead.  Goals today came from Wilson, Cunningham, Pantellerisco and Sherman. The referee was a stand in and we thank him for taking the task on at a time when there appears to be a shortage. We have no complaints on that one.

Comment: Conceding six goals says it all.

Sunday September 30th, 1.30 pm KO
Maru Juniors
LYFA Cup    Home    3-3 Match Abandoned

This game was quite rightly abandoned by the referee.

Sunday October 7th, 2.00 pm KO
Gillibrand Warriors
League B    Home    4-1 win

This game, played at Station Road in perfect conditions, was a welcome win after the two previous weekends.  Gillibrand (GW) began the game with ten players and defended well to keep the score goalless.  By the break it was 11 players each and nil-nil.

The second half saw HB take control and Wilson broke the deadlock.  A second for Wilson and then one for Haddock put HB 3-0 up.  GW scored from an excellent strike, a free kick some 20m from goal - a real beauty. Finally Wilson added his third and the game concluded without any more goals, but plenty of chances for HB.

Comment: Credit to GW for their attitude and resilience in this game. Also, well done to HB players who played some good football on an excellent playing surface.
